About the life and works of JRR Tolkien

tolkien.gif

Recent polls have consistently declared that J.R.R. Tolkien is "the most influential author of the century", and The Lord of the Rings as "Book of the Century".
:I certainly agree! JRR Tolkien (1892-1972) was a Professor of Anglo Saxon at Oxford University.
He was married to Edith Bratt, and they and their children lived a very happy life.
Tolkien wrote THE HOBBIT, a fantasy tale, as a bedtime story for his children, and it was published in 1936, and became a sell-out novel, and was declared a modern classic.
The publishers asked him to write a sequal to THE HOBBIT, and so Tolkien agreed.
A decade later, in 1954, THE LORD OF THE RINGS was published
and it became an instant hit!
Tolkien died in 1972, and he left THE SILMARILLION (a prelude to THE HOBBIT) to be published by his son, Christopher, in 1977.
